After spending a few exciting days in Ho Chi Minh City, it was time for me to continue my journey through Vietnam and head north to Da Nang. I booked a flight with VietJet Air, one of Vietnam’s most popular low-cost airlines. Everything went smoothly until I reached the check-in counter. That is when I learned a valuable lesson about Vietnamese budget airlines: they weigh all your carry-on luggage together, including even the smallest bag or backpack.
When the scale stopped at 8.3 kilograms, I was politely told that the limit was 7 kilograms total, not per bag as I had assumed. There was no negotiation possible – rules are rules. The result? An additional 20 euros fee for the overweight baggage. It was not the end of the world, but it was a reminder that in Southeast Asia, budget airlines often have very strict policies. After having a laugh with the staff and a lighter wallet, I was finally on my way to Da Nang.
As the plane descended, the view was breathtaking. Golden beaches stretched endlessly along the coast, with the blue waters of the South China Sea shimmering under the sun. Da Nang felt different right away; calmer, cleaner, and more organised than the bustling Ho Chi Minh. I could immediately understand why Da Nang has been ranked among the best places to live in the world. It combines the comfort of a modern city with the beauty and peace of a seaside town.
During my stay, I explored some of the city’s most famous landmarks. The highlight was definitely the Dragon Bridge, an impressive structure that literally breathes fire and sprays water during the weekend night shows. Standing among the crowd as the dragon’s head lit up, I felt like a kid again. When the flames turned to water, everyone started cheering. I got completely soaked, but it was all part of the fun. The energy of the place was contagious; locals and tourists alike were smiling, laughing, and enjoying the moment together.
Beyond the bridge, I spent time strolling along My Khe Beach, often called one of Asia’s most beautiful beaches. The soft sand, gentle waves, and relaxed atmosphere made it the perfect place to unwind. The food scene in Da Nang also impressed me – from fresh seafood by the beach to local street dishes like Mi Quang, a flavourful noodle speciality of the region.
What struck me most about Da Nang was its balance. It is a city that offers everything, like modern comforts, a growing expat community, rich culture, and nature right at your doorstep. Whether you want to surf in the morning, enjoy Vietnamese coffee at a hip café, or visit ancient temples in the afternoon, Da Nang has it all within reach.
In conclusion, travelling through Vietnam was an amazing experience. From the chaos and charm of Ho Chi Minh City to the calm coastal beauty of Da Nang, the country surprised me in every way. Vietnam is a place where tradition meets progress, where every street corner tells a story, and where travellers like me can find both adventure and peace of mind.
